It was build in the beginning of the 13th century in Gothic style. It was the only remaining building in the quarter of St Jean after a bombing in World War II. The city has a history dating back to the Middle Ages when it was a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance River. Sant-Malo was also famous for its piracy. The corsaires of Saint-Malo forced Englisch ships passing up the channel to pay tribute and brought welt from further away. </div><div>Most of the city was destroyed in the Second World War, but is was rebuilt in its original style. Work on this beautiful religious building started in 1220 and was completed in 1266. The front of the cathedral has a gallery of 22 statues of kings. The three portals are decorated with sculptures of biblical figures and saints. In the interior 126 pillars support the 42,3 m high vaults. It has a total length of 2143.21 m and connects the cities Le Havre and Honfleur. Construction of the bridge started in 1988 and was finished 7 years later. The deck is at its highest point 52 m over the water, the pylons are 214.77 m tall and weigh more than 20 000 ton. He was inspired by the castles that he saw while he was participating in the Second Crusad. The cross on the front wall is still a reminder of Philip of Alsace’s devotion.<br />In the 14th century the castle was abandoned by the counts of Flanders. After it was used as a courthouse and a prison the castle decayed. Traces from a Romanesque church that stood here can still be seen in the crypt today. It replaced a Romanesque church that was built on this location. Construction began in the early 13th century in Scheldt Gothic style. Typical for this style is the blue-grey stone from the Tournai area that was brought up the river Scheldt to Gent and the large tower of the church. It was build in the 15th century with a beautiful vaulted ceiling. The small white house against the Meat House is called " 't Galgenhuisje ". Construction of the 95 metre high belfry started around 1313 and was completed in 1380. The bell tower was used to announce the time and various warnings.
